apparatus for remote picking of apples

Anyone around here have a good solid grippy pair of lazy tongs, or something? The big apple tree behind my apartment building has one apple nearly ripe, hanging forty feet in the air and eight feet straight out from the edge of the roof.

I want to save the groundlings from it.

A tongs with fangs might grip well, though it would obviously break the skin. I am not opposed to dividing and eating (or spitting out) this apple on the spot.
