Corrupted profile. One bug somewhere and your account is trash, and Windows makes no attempt at diagnosis or recovery. This pretty well killed my day, fixing up a new account (with the warty name of "eli_2"). I can't find where it stored the old per-user environment variables, so no doubt for weeks I'll be tripping over them one at a time.
