garden news
Feb. 26th, 2003 11:59 pmBy south fence, laid a broad arc of shallot cloves behind thyme, parsley, and sage (hmm, should really have permuted and added rosemary). Found a sprouty walnut in the dirt there and buried it over by the west fence, with the other plants of small-treeish form factor (rose and is it a dogwood?).
In front of house, shoved aside rhododendron leaves, extracted dandelions, and grubbed up chicken's meat. Turned over a patch of soil under the rhododendron for sweet woodruff, and an adjacent one with perlite for Corsican mint. Covered perlited soil with a blanket of reserved perlite-free soil to satisfy aesthetic dictates.
On west side, made a bed, with perlite and blanket, for a checkered fritillary.
Pulverized the hunk of dirt in the "strawberry planter". Planted it with love-in-idleness, kiss-me-at-the-garden-gate, kiss-me-ere-I-rise, heartsease, Viola tricolor.
Also picked up all the nasty dog-strewn trash in the basement stairs. Discovery in this process: raw chow fun noodles, if you let them dry out, turn tough and translucent. I see sculptural applications.
