In job limbo on a couple of threads. Time to spawn off more, I guess. For self-improvement I've been applying MMX to an old (DOS, VGA hardware) video-synthesis program, which ought to run like a bat out of hell on modern hardware.

Every canker sore could be the doomsday canker sore that just keeps spreading and spreading to span the whole mucous membrane.

Link day!

The finding of the Blaschka glass marine invertebrates:
Professor Thomas Eisner, a young faculty member who was working in Roberts Hall and had begun to explore its musty corridors, found a series of locked antique wooden cabinets. Through the dingy glass windows were visible hundreds of delicate and unusual sea creatures, all the more extraordinary because landlocked Ithaca is several hundred miles away from the closest tide pools. Eisner, now recognized as a founder of the field of chemical ecology, and his graduate student Roger Payne, who later discovered that Humpback whales sing songs [endnote 1], picked the locks with a paper clip and were absolutely mesmerized to find that the highly detailed ocean invertebrates, including octopus, squid, pelagic snail, and sea cucumber, were made of glass.

The UNIVAC FASTRAND II random-access mass storage system: learn about the magic number 28, unearthed by Baron von Fastrand! Cringe at the titanic conflict between the earth's rotation and the short-lived FASTRAND I!

We have fuligin.

You probably heard about the awe-inspiring life cycle of the lancet fluke, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, but it never hurts to goggle at it again:

bile duct of cattle and others
-> feces of cattle and others
-> land snail Cionella lubrica
-> "mucus slime balls which form in the snail's respiratory chamber and are eventually deposited on vegetation"
-> ant Formica fusca,
- where most encyst in the abdomen, but one or two encyst in the sub-esophageal ganglion,
- which alters the ants' behavior so that when the temperature falls at night, they climb to the top of grass blades and sit there until morning,
- increasing their chance of being eaten by
cattle and others.
