Say an academic article has an abstract that sets things up and then closes with "we campare blah blah blah". No description, in the abstract, of the results of the comparison.
Is this like a survey, where they compare umpteen different heuristic algorithms for blah blah blah? 'Cos in that case the results probably aren't all that dramatic, and leaving that out is a minor point.
If they're comparing their own work to someone else's, that is more serious. If they're comparing their own work to someone else's unfavorably, then much more so.
