One of the books I got yesterday, Lewin's Phantastica, makes mention of arsenic-eaters, and arsenic as an addictive stimulant drug. I poked around on the web and found a Chemical Educator paper of "arsenic curiosa" which has a bit of information on arsenic-eating, and also a paragraph on Clare Booth Luce's arsenic poisoning while Ambassador to Italy.

I flip open another of yesterday's books, the Introductory Mycology, for today's fun fungal fact, and happen across the same incident. (Though stories differ. The book says that "one voracious fungus attacked the green pigment in the wallpaper of her bedroom, producing arsine", whereas the paper cites the CIA's analysis implicating washing-machine vibration of the ceiling.)
