I've noted that to get a squirrel to be trusting enough to take food from a human directly, they have to be pretty healthy and well-trained. Sick animals hide from humans. So, yeah, rabies, but I doubt it seriously in this case.

I had some trained squirrels in my backyard at one point. If I tried harder I could have more again here in Pgh - there are some easily-recognizable critters I could work on, but I don't have the time.
(We've got a bloodline of black squirrels around here - dad and some offspring. Really different.)
