now I know why that last batch of chili tasted wimpy

I started preheating the oven, and almost soon enough discovered that some dried peppers had been left there from toasting them.

The oven is for an experimental squash/apple casserole affair. We'll see how that goes. I'm hoping I can discreetly abstract enough to evaluate it before I bring it to dinner.

Note to friendly neighborhood market: I understand how putting caddies of produce out on the sidewalk has eye appeal and stroll-by diversion-inwards powers and those good things, but it makes it damn hard to find the squash in the produce section.
