The garbage disposal is presently lacking one of its two chewy-arm bits. So it's unbalanced, so it makes the sink vibrate. So a bowl with water in the sink shifts through circular ripples to a nubbly texture, a standing wave too complicated to read in mutation as the spoon slides with the tilt of the bowl.

Probably I shouldn't run the thing too terribly long at one in the morning.

No, but you should run it during the day with a sink full of bowls and spoons, and see if you can get either a great picture of the water surfaces or reach some kind of bumpy metal-and-glass melody.
