Especially at night, the osmanthus outside smells wonderful. I would have said "mostly like rose, you know, rose rose, with honeysuckle, orange, maybe grapefruit", but apparently not, or "rose rose" is unconscionably vague: an olfactory professional calls it fruity-floral apricot. Anyway, it's lovely, I'm sure even from a vial, but more so on a breath of cool night air.

Also from that site is that next after fenugreek, fake maple syrup flavor contains 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-2-ol-l-one, cyclotene. Oh, but farther down on the page: 4,5-Dimethyl-3-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone, "the key organoleptic principle of roasted Fenugreek seed" (and of Mapeline), "the main flavor principle in sugar molasses".

But wait, "The chemical which follows is even more powerful." That's its 5-ethyl homolog "maple furanone", "one of the most outstanding of modern flavor materials", "a key organoleptic note in Soy sauce" -- "nearly 3,000,000 times more powerful than cyclotene and in fact ... one of the most powerful flavor chemicals known to man."

Oh yes, to identify fonts -- it's nifty that people offer this -- you can answer a series of questions, or upload an image and help tell it what's what letter. I tried both on the "Update Journal" I get on this page, and both failed. It happens, says the page source, to be Verdana. Maybe they mean real fonts used other than on the web.

(I notice, now, that the 0.05% damascenone in osmanthus might in fact be noticeable, given that (beta-)damascenone is at only 0.14% in rose oil itself.)

Heh. I'll see.

Speaking of model rocketry,
December 20, 2003 - Since the publication by ARSA of the ATFE's attempt to produce an anti-rocketry video on the dangers of hobby rockets to commercial aircraft, vendors and manufacturers have refused to sell to the ATFE. This resulted in a letter from the ATFE to the president of Aerotech, Gary Rosenfield demanding that they deliver 40 G80 motors to the ATFE. The ATFE letter claimed the hobby rocket motors were needed in the interest of national security under the Homeland Security Act - 18 U.S.C. 843(i).
