broom, Ballard, buckets

Scotch broom is a noxious weed, but I have to say it's pleasant to sit on a rock in the canal, under the canopy of a broom, for ten minutes after lunch, looking under the water. You don't see the stone, the ripples remind, you see the light. A boulder underwater wavers; a stone below the characteristic size of the ripples beats like a heart. Scotch broom flowers smell of peaches and banana, but synthetically.

One of our building's conference rooms is named Ballard.

Before I left work, I looked at a page on growing tomatoes upside down, which suggested those five-gallon paint buckets, with handles. Instead I stopped by the Indoor Sun for two sturdy pots I can drill hanging-holes in. On the way home, some people had set out free stuff: a futon frame, two tires, and four five-gallon paint buckets. I didn't hang tomatoes before it got dark, though.

I saw those buckets and things, and resisted. Good thing I did.

I took two, but now they're awfully wide to fit between the sliding door and the plant-web. I dunno.

Lettuces also do very well in hanging baskets. Plus, no slug problem!
(Though I suppose a slug that could make it all the way up to your balcony should be rewarded for their endeavor.)
