Some species of Penicillium and Aspergillus destroy leather and fabrics, imparting a musty odor to shoes and clothing. Before air conditioning and its dehumidifying action was common in the Louisiana of our youths, we remember that the insides of our shoes were always blue. This was probably the first unrecognized encounter with fungi for each of us.

Interesting article. I can't make out what exactly the group is doing. "The project uses molecular systematic methods in addition to traditional identification based on morphology—the form and structure of the organism."? Well, sure, since 1970 who doesn't.

Sounds kinda like a big umbrella project to get visibility and funding. I can get behind that.
