fun fungal fact

Alexopoulos, Mims, and Blackwell, Introductory Mycology, p. 474.

Order Laboulbeniales: Occurrence, General Characteristics, and Taxonomy:
[...]
Traditionally, species have been classified in the order on the bassi of morphological characteristics that appear so bizarre when compared to other ascomycetes that one species was described as a parasitic worm of bat flies and the group was suggested to be related to red algae.

Alexopoulos, Mims, and Blackwell, Introductory Mycology, p. 475.

Family Pyxidiophoraceae.
[...]
The mites are fairly immobile and hitchhike on beetles and flies, a phenomenon known as phoresy. Ascospores of Pyxidiophora are carried along by the mites (Fig. 15-13) that ride along on insects and, thus, are said to be hypophoretic.

"bassi"? is that a typo for "basis" or a really weird word?

I wonder what I would have to do to be classified as related to red algae. Maybe I could make that a new life goal.

That's a weird sequencing typo.

The Alexander-Gordian way to achieve your goal will be to present yourself, and a red alga, to alien taxonomists.
