species of the day: Sergentia koschowi

The deepest-living insect known, a bloodworm from the near-anaerobic abyssal oozes of Lake Baikal. Chock full of hemoglobin.

But there is no species of insect that completes its life cycle in an extreme aquatic environment. Again, just like the oceanic Halobates, only a part of the Chironomidae life cycle is in that environment (larvae and pupae), midges are mosquito-like and the adults are air borne.
