SEATTLE - Seattle Country Day School students in grades 4-8 recently teamed up with Seattle Department of Transportation engineers to learn about rack and pinion mechanisms that are used as bridge components and will soon put their new knowledge to the test when they raise their own models of the Fremont bascule bridge. This year's Engineering Event is dedicated to Seattle Country Day's neighbor, the Fremont Bridge whose own reconstruction begins next year. The event will take place between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. on November 24, in the school gym. The one requirement is that all "contraptions" will be made of industrial junk used in clever ways. SDOT's Bridge Operations Supervisor Joann McGovern will signal the opening of the students' own Fremont Bridges.Extreme Engineering Seattle Style
