two eyes are better than one
My dad sent me Grandpa's old microscope, a dissection microscope to a doctor, that I remember Grandpa showing me mineral specimens through. My plan is to you it for mosses, though I had forgotten how totally not a field instrument it is. I set it up and figured out most of the frobbers. (There are a couple of set-screws of unclear intent, so I just firmed them up and left them alone. There's also what's obviously an alternate baseplate you can switch in, but what would you do with a transparent baseplate here?)
It's a stereo scope, and this turns out to be infinitely cooler than a monocular one. The things you see through it aren't images, they're solid real things. Also the objective system has 0.7x - 4x zoom, preserving the plane of focus, so you can fly in to the crevice of your fingernail and back away.
He also sent a slide rule they found. Name and year scratched into its leather case for several years.
Started work today. It looks promising.
