priorities

I've been wondering where my free time goes -- time that's not allocated to anything like work or something planned with people or running errands, and Dee is doing something of her own. this is time that's left over. it's a lot of hours in a week. what do I do with it? not enough, I feel like. so let me try thinking about my priorities by writing them down.

higher priority:

• write fiction
  trick is it takes about two hours into a sitting to warm up and start producing. needs large blocks of time.
  
• make music
  especially as soon as Logic arrives.
  
• practice the didj
  I don't really know how to progress without a teacher, but I can at least keep in practice.
  
• read, esp. non-fiction
  keep up with the acquisition, um at least a little.
  
• cluster the word-book
  probably thousands of words in the in-box. (this is an old version of what I"m talking about.)
  
• write non-work-related code
  broken geek! I am a broken geek! there's some music software I want to write, and these old old eye-candy programs I should port to Windows and maybe dolly up with some Python scripting.
  
• personal research activities
  so many things to figure out.
  
• go outside
  an hour outside is more memorable than an hour indoors.
  
• learn to dance
  no waltzing, no wedding, that's the deal.
  
• get more sleep
  my free-time activities don't suffer as much because they happen in the evening, but I can't get any work done during the day if I haven't slept. then I either stay in the office late to try to catch up, or feel guilty all evening.
  

lower priority:

• read Usenet
  might drop everything high-traffic except rec.arts.sf.composition, but if I don't read rasf.written I do wonder how I'll find out about new books before they go out of print.
  
• browse the OED
  an easy resolution since the software has now horked itself.
  
• follow zephyr traffic
  skimming the logs is one thing, following in real time is deadly.
  
• fritter the time away
  I waste a lot more time than I can account for. I don't know what I'm doing. I would like always to be doing something, where that something may be "relaxing" but I know that's what I'm doing.

Hmm, now what would I have done for fun as a kid if I didn't write software? :)
