About yesterday: my ability to listen to music has atrophied. I tried to listen intently, without stray thoughts, and for several pieces yesterday couldn't do that for more than a few seconds at a time. Some of this music was hard for me to get a grasp of -- unfamiliar, structure obscure -- but just now I listened to a track on a CD of mine, and had similar trouble. I used to be better at this. Well, no wonder, I used to spend more time at this, listening to music, as opposed to having it on while doing something else.

Yes, i feel like i don't spend enough time listening to music myself.

Still, maybe you were just distracted? Sometimes mood can affect my ability to sit still and concentrate.

For that concert, it could be. But it triggered the noticing that I just don't do that anymore anything like I used to. Some people are highly absorbed readers; I never was, but I was for music after I discovered music.

I wish I were better able to listen to music. When we go to symphony concerts, I often find my mind wandering, and I have trouble grasping the structure of a piece. I wish I could listen well enough to notice the transition from one movement to another, for example.

Yeah, one of these years I have to train myself to hear harmonic structure.
