Mike/pho, raptor/pigeon, optimization, Collapsium, kilts
Mike and I had lunch at the Than Brothers on the Ave (which sure enough does not have the ""vegetarian pho"" -- I'd think it would be the one to), caught up on jobs and grad school, and tried to justify all these freakin' neural receptor subtypes. We can't get away from expecting a selective endogenous ligand for each, unless it's an issue with the back-ends so to speak.
A guy ahead of me on the sidewalk called quietly, "Man, want to see something messed up?". It was a small raptor perched low in a pine tree, holding in one claw a pigeon almost its own size.
I was very good and didn't buy a thing almost.
The little direct-II biquad filter I'm practicing optimization on was taking over 500 cycles per sample on 1024-sample blocks. And the cache never seems to warm up. (Oh -- it must be thrashing the associativity -- have to check on that.) It's down to 370 with unrolling, 320 with prefetching. Tragically AMD's CPU simulator doesn't model L2 misses, which makes it useless on anything that ever misses L2.
rainydayreaders discussion of The Collapsium: no radical disagreements (fun fairytale Tom Swift yes yes), so we ran through it in not too long and then moved on to nifty quilts and whom to read next.
Along the way parked by the sidewalk was a kilt trailer -- a little box trailer plastered with pro-kilt stickers and the URL "http://www.nckilts.com/". And the door by it was tartan-painted. nckilts.com is "Located in Ballard", so maybe that's nckilts.com's front door.
So Tartan Day is April 6, the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath.

Pooh Chair?

"The chair IS Pooh! The back is his head, the seat is his body, the front is his arms and feet" -- yeah, pretty much, but the one we saw didn't have any hunny. He may have gone off to get some; I took him into the lobby last night (after discovering that he was featherlight foam and flinging him around a bit) and he was gone this morning.
