notes on South Florida wildlife
The gated enclaves keep palm trees for display, and light them at night with fixtures on the ground, pointing upwards. These fixtures attract insects. A semicircle of toads sits facing each light.
Escaped iguanas have gone feral in South Florida. We saw a good dozen, easily four feet long, around the Japanese garden of the Morikami Museum, sprawled over the carefully selected imported boulders.

Have you seen Edward Scissorhands? The topiary he does in an area with the same houses over and over was filmed in South Florida and the whole cookie cutter houses with overly-managed foliage is so bizarrely typical.
The Everglades isn't like that but it's also overrun with pest plants that were imported and then ran wild and took over.
