Yesterday I took down the birdfeeder to add a squirrel cage so we could start using it again. It had turned into a terrarium (picture), with leftover sunflower seeds sprouting in the bottom. And wasps had built a small nest inside, excellently sheltered and protected -- empty now, but when I cleaned it all out I found white grubs creeping in the seed-gunk, so the animal kingdom was still represented. And for a third kingdom, the growth of wiry blackish threads I think was Nostoc (flagelliforme-looking), cyanobacteria.

I built a chicken-wire cage around the birdfeeder, filled it, and hung it back up. Early results are that none of our birds are filtrable through chicken wire.

It snowed four feet an inch or two last night.

I think composition is important, but only because it doesn't stand out. It is balanced, which is enough. I think I like it because my first thoughts were _interesting!_, then _what it it?_ and all the little details you try and look into to figure it out. And while you're doing that, it's nice to look at.

I like the tree one for a much different reason. It looks so prehistoric. It looks like a child's science book. You could imagine a line drawing of a standard human for scale, and a mastadon in the background, and little labels describing all the trees and things.
