birdfeeder, snow
Dec. 14th, 2008 11:58 pmYesterday I took down the birdfeeder to add a squirrel cage so we could start using it again. It had turned into a terrarium (picture), with leftover sunflower seeds sprouting in the bottom. And wasps had built a small nest inside, excellently sheltered and protected -- empty now, but when I cleaned it all out I found white grubs creeping in the seed-gunk, so the animal kingdom was still represented. And for a third kingdom, the growth of wiry blackish threads I think was Nostoc (flagelliforme-looking), cyanobacteria.
I built a chicken-wire cage around the birdfeeder, filled it, and hung it back up. Early results are that none of our birds are filtrable through chicken wire.
It snowedfour feet an inch or two last night.

Date: 2008-12-16 09:14 am (UTC)I like the tree one for a much different reason. It looks so prehistoric. It looks like a child's science book. You could imagine a line drawing of a standard human for scale, and a mastadon in the background, and little labels describing all the trees and things.

i also like the one with the car for the fun value.
