left and right

Speaking of driving lessons: one of my failings as an instructor turns out to be that I can't keep left and right straight. I've always had some difficulty with this (couldn't tell one from the other until in first grade my special ed teacher taught me the "your left hand makes an L" trick), but not usually so often these days. I kind of imagine it's from being on an unusual side of the car.

Don't feel bad! When I was in the military, I had a hell of a time remembering my right from left on the parade ground. It was embarassing

Thanks to a few years as a band geek (& marching in cutesy patterns around a football field), I was able to firmly entrench "left foot" and "right foot" in my mind.

I still have trouble with hands, though. I've been known to hold up my left foot and match it up with the hand on that side to tell the difference. When driving, I have to use the "left hand makes an L" trick.
